                Kanaya frowns as she presses another rag to his forehead. “I told you,” Karkat mutters. “I’m feeling just fine. Really.”

                “You haven’t even talked to any of your friends in weeks, Karkat. You’re not feeling well! What did your boss say when you told him?”

                “He was pretty quiet about it all, like he didn’t know what to say. I think it never occurred to him that people die. I asked if I could offer up a pretty competent worker to replace me, too, and he said that he would take whoever it was into consideration. When I left his office, he clapped his hand on my shoulder like he did when he first hired me.”

                “Do I even need to ask who you offered up?”

                Karkat smiles gently. “Sollux is better than I am at programing. He’s better than me at everything. He’ll get pretty damn far working for Intel.”

He feels like shit for only being able to talk to him for such a short time, so Kanaya makes him chocolate chip waffles with turkey bacon to make up for it. It doesn’t do anything more than make him less hungry, but he pretends like he feels better as a thank-you. She, obviously, knows he’s lying. He, obviously, keeps going with it anyway. Eventually, he falls into the flow of “feeling better” and the thought of Sollux leaves his mind.

The logs in the fireplace have gone out and A Walk to Remember has looped through enough times that it’s already at the beginning again. He considers not answering the door and instead going back to sleep. He knows he slept for at least twelve hours, but the lethargy that just won’t leave has yet to go from his body.
