There has never been a day where taking a ride on his motorcycle hasn’t cleared his head—until today. Normally he would go up to the mountains, take the switchbacks at a slow but dangerous speed, revel in the feel of air whipping through his hair, in his face, over his shoulders. Today, though, he’s distracted. He’s fighting to keep his attention on the road, the twist of his wrist level and unmoving. He doesn’t need to rev his engine now, not in the middle of a switchback, not with a passenger hanging onto him.
They say that you shouldn’t take in passengers who have either never ridden a motorcycle or are easily scared within the first six months of getting your license—the first year if you’re sane. It’s just a local saying, popular among the newbies in the biker gangs and the older ones who have seen enough crashes to know how to figure out why they happened. Karkat is both of these things.
